Appearance

The caterpillar is green on the upper side of the body and bluish-green underneath. There are thin yellow stripes on the sides.

The wingspan is 70–90 mm. Apex of forewing hooked. Wings pale green, fading with age. Yellow bar in forewing cell; more diffuse in female.

Habitat

It is found in South America, Central America, and southern North America.

Behavior

Anteos clorindeflies year round in the tropical parts of its range and from August to December in the north.These butterflies usually fly high and rapidly over the canopy or along rivers.

Males are common at puddles, often in large aggregations.

Diet

The larvae feed on Senna spectabilis. Butterflies feed on nectar, preferring red or purple flowers.

Reproduction

For their reproduction you need a terrarium with a size of 50 x 50 x 70 cm. Eggs are laid singly on edges of host plant leaves.Eggs are ribbed and elongated, their colour is  light yellow. It is better to keep the caterpillars in terrariums with a mesh lid of 6-8 pieces. In the terrarium, you need to place a forage plant. The temperature is 20-25 oC at the humidity of 60-70%. The pupae are bright greenlike a folded leaf. The pupa stage lasts 8-10 days.

In captivity

The mesh terrarium with a size of 50 × 50 × 70 mm is suitable for keeping butterflies. Room temperature is necessary. Daylight time is 12 hours. You can feed the butterflies with honey syrup diluted with boiled water in a ratio of 1: 10.
